I wasn’t sure if I should clean up the stubble on the sides and stuff so it’s just a clean goatee or what.

It’s very hard to self evaluate in terms of this stuff.

Beard doesn't look bad, you should know it when you decided for yourself to have it that way.
I have a constant 3-5 day beard and only shave it with the machine because otherwise i would bleed from the razors.
Won't ever go like i was in the military. Shaved like hell and bled and still got my sergeant humiliate me for bad shaving.
Bastard hated me.

Some people want to humiliate you, some don't want you to have a beard, even though they don't know how you would look like without one.
You should do what you think looks best on you, it's your style.
Don't get dressed up by somebody else.
