Even when they are close together? Shouldn't they be farther apart in the nasal bridge and longer on the outside?

It looks better if you make then wider set in the middle yes. I tried it myself since I have the same problem, worked a charm.

yeah grow it outside and trim parts close to nasal bridge to get illusion of greater ipd
