Should u give up sometimes

I was talking to a guy about if it’s ok to give up your goals sometimes and they really seemed to think u should never give up.
I even gave example of a 4 foot basketball player but he said the guy shouldn’t give up he could still make it if he put in the work.
Jfl that’s dumb to me sometimes u need to give up when its not worth it but I was unintentionally gaslighted so now I questioning if I’m wrong.
