Should you train abs for an aesthetic physique?

not a whole lot, could make blocky waist. your gonna get enough core work from bracing on squats and rows. just be lean and do some occasional hanging raises or sit ups.

Yes, you should train abs. No, you should not train obliques (next to abs). They are used in many twisting and horizontal stability exercises, which are important for functional strength but negative for aesthetics.

Abs should be trained with progressive overload in 8-12 rep range just like other muscles, no 100 rep program or cardio bs.
Also remember, in trained individuals that aren't on steriods, it isn't entirely possible to lose fat and gain muscle at the same time, so to build up abs, you must train with progressive overload and proper recovery in a calorie surplus, but to reveal abs, you must maintain your muscle while in a calorie deficit.

Yes you need to train abs, just bracing will give you some core, but it's like the forearms, just gripping things will give you some training but you need to isolate them and train them dynamicaly (not isometricaly) to make them stand out (especially the lower part) and not just some abs bc you're lean.
Like the difference might be from Mario ross abs to a really defined 6pack.

Blocky waist is good if you have wide hips that you need to compensate. Though you’ll have to put a superhuman effort into growing your bideltoid. It’s all ratios.

Depends on the person. Many people naturally have great six packs just by being lean enough, but for others like myself, heavy direct work is necessary for them to show.

Definite yes.

That said, genetics plays a big role. Your abs can be partially covered by a bother muscle (forgot name), that’s the reason some people can only see a 4 pack versus someone who can get an 8 pack. I can never get an 8 pack because the lower 2 packs are not visible.

Lowering your body fat is the best thing for abs though.
