I could've had potentially this if I didn't get braces and a nocturnal use headgear which gave me major asymmetry from sleeping on my left side (the more developed side from the resistance bands not force stopping its development as it did my right), made me mouthbreath in my sleep and stopped my maxillary development making it downgrown at the same time....

so over

bump for the schizopost

o woah really?

not like having a headgear affects your bones when you are 7 or something.

Maxillary growth and the overall development of the skull can indeed influence the shape and position of the ears. Here's a more detailed explanation of how these factors interrelate:
  1. Craniofacial Development:
    • The maxilla (upper jaw) is a central structure in craniofacial development. Its growth affects the overall shape and structure of the face, which in turn can influence the positioning of the ears.
    • Proper growth and alignment of the maxilla ensure that the midface is proportionate, which helps in maintaining the correct positioning and shape of the ears relative to other facial features.
  2. Midface Deficiency:
    • If the maxilla does not grow properly, it can lead to a condition known as midface deficiency. This condition can cause the cheekbones to appear flattened and the upper jaw to be set back.
    • Midface deficiency can impact the alignment and positioning of the ears, making them appear more prominent or altering their angle relative to the head.
  3. Associated Syndromes:
    • Certain genetic conditions and syndromes that affect craniofacial development can also affect ear shape. For instance, conditions like Treacher Collins syndrome and Pierre Robin sequence involve abnormalities in the development of the maxilla and mandible (lower jaw), often resulting in atypical ear shapes and positions.
    • These conditions demonstrate a clear link between maxillary development and ear morphology.
  4. Ear Development:
    • The ears develop from structures known as pharyngeal arches during embryonic growth. The first and second pharyngeal arches contribute to the formation of the external ear.
    • Abnormalities in the growth of these arches, which are influenced by the overall craniofacial development, can result in atypical ear shapes and positions.
  5. Orthodontic and Surgical Interventions:
    • In cases where improper maxillary growth affects ear shape and facial symmetry, orthodontic treatments or surgical interventions can help correct these issues.
    • Procedures like maxillary advancement or other craniofacial surgeries can help realign the facial structures, potentially improving the appearance and position of the ears.
In summary, while the maxilla and ear structures develop from different embryological origins, their growth and final positions are interdependent within the context of overall craniofacial development. Improper maxillary growth can contribute to changes in ear shape and positioning, particularly in the context of broader craniofacial abnormalities.

Maxillary Skeletal Expansion (MSE) and headgear are orthodontic treatments designed to correct specific dental and skeletal issues. While these treatments primarily aim to address problems related to the teeth and jaw, they can have indirect effects on the position and appearance of the ears due to changes in the facial structure. Here's how:

Maxillary Skeletal Expansion (MSE)

MSE is a technique used to widen the upper jaw (maxilla). It involves the use of a device that applies lateral forces to the maxillary bones, causing them to gradually move apart. This treatment is often used to correct crossbites, narrow palates, and other issues related to maxillary constriction.

Effects on Ear Position:

  • Indirect Influence: As the maxilla widens, the overall shape and proportions of the midface change. This can subtly alter the relative position of the ears. For instance, if the maxilla moves forward or expands laterally, it can create the perception that the ears have moved or their angle has changed, even though the ears themselves are not directly moved by the device.
  • Craniofacial Balance: Improved maxillary position can enhance overall facial harmony, which may make the ears appear more proportionate and balanced with the rest of the face.

Headgear

Orthodontic headgear is used to correct bite and jaw discrepancies by applying external force to guide the growth of the upper jaw or to retract the upper teeth. It is commonly used in growing patients to correct overbites or to hold back the growth of the upper jaw while allowing the lower jaw to catch up.

Effects on Ear Position:

  • Indirect Influence: Similar to MSE, headgear affects the maxilla and overall facial structure. Adjustments to the maxillary position can impact how the ears are positioned relative to other facial features.
  • Facial Proportions: By correcting overbites or other jaw discrepancies, headgear can improve facial proportions, which may affect how the ears are perceived in terms of their position and angle.

Conclusion

Both MSE and headgear primarily target the maxilla and the dental arches, but their impact on the midface can lead to changes in the relative position and appearance of the ears. These changes are typically indirect and result from the alteration of facial proportions rather than the direct movement of the ears. Improved facial harmony and balance achieved through these treatments can make the ears appear more aligned with the rest of the facial features. However, any significant concerns about ear position should be discussed with an orthodontist or a craniofacial specialist to understand the potential outcomes of these treatments.
