....were forcibly sterilized in 1976, in an attempt to control the population growth. Most of them were poor, homeless men who were picked from the streets or arrested for small stuff like begging or not having a train ticket and offered to choose between prison and sterilization.
This happened in the period called "The Emergency" when civil liberties were suspended, very few people know about this today or care.
