Ive been using the following skincare routine:

Morning:
cleanse with water
apply vit c serum
Snail mucin moisturizer
Spf 50 hyaluronic acid sunscreen

Night:
Cleanse with water
Tretinoin 0.05
Snail mucin moisturizer

My moisturizer is probably trash and my skin gets messed up when cleansing with anything that isnt water. what should i switch out ?

What's your skin type and what issues are you trying to correct in the first place?

naturally oily but since ive been on tret for the past 10 months its become more dry than oily

Tret just gave me more acne for some reason. I only put it on my nose now

how long have you used it for?
A few years.

Went away when I stopped for some reason

It was like little pimples tho I think it did help get rid of extreme acne (I used to have bad acne)

Hmm should i take a break? would it do me harm? honestly prior to tretinoin my skin was great and I had no pimples but I went down a skincare rabbithole until I got to what I have right now which works but is very slow

So here's my skincare routine:

- AM: Water, Vitamin C Serum, Sunscreen
- PM: Cleanser, Adapalene 0.1% (used to use tret. moved to adapalene because of the lower price, and have yet to see a recession in my skin condition), Moisturizer

I have pretty much perfect skin.

Your routine is pretty good, however I would look into your moisturizer and sunscreen. Certain moisturizers, specially those heavy on HA can actually cause more water loss, without bothering you with the details, many formulations with HA actually can't reach deep enough into the skin, so the HA stays on the surface layers, all that does it actually pull moisture up so it's easier for it to evaporate from your face.

This doesn't happen to everyone, but it's very likely, specially if you are certain races. So you can figure out how bad it would be if you use a moisturizer, probably with HA, and a sunscreen with it too. The reason why your skin went from oily to somewhat dry was simply tretinoin, increasing cell rate of turnover and even reducing sebum production, this is why proper moisture is ideal.

WHAT'S YOUR SOLUTION? I would recommend you switch your moisturizer for a single-ingredient oil, like Squalane or Beef Tallow (or any oil that doesn't clog your pores), these ingredients have the ability of protecting you from transepidermal water loss since they create an occlusive barrier on top of the skin. You can probably keep the sunscreen with HA without issues, but I would switch it too just in case. See if this protocol works, and remember that good skin also comes from the inside, your skin's is an organ like any other, so be hydrated and meet your nutritional requirements daily.

I use Natural Moisturizing Factors + Beta Glucan by The Ordinary, cheap, and has been working excellent for me. I would recommend that, or trying Squalane.
