Disclaimer: Peptides and Accutane are easier options, but this guide is for people who don’t want to hop on either and want to stick with a basic topical routine.
JFL at people buying 12 random serums, washing their face 5x a day, then wondering why their skin looks like shit.
THE BASE ROUTINE
AM- SkinCeuticals Simply Clean
- PanOxyl 4% Benzoyl Peroxide Wash
- SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore
- EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46
- SkinCeuticals Simply Clean
- Differin Gel (adapalene 0.1%)
- SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore
ADAPALENE
Differin contains adapalene, a topical retinoid that helps prevent clogged pores and new breakouts.Apply a thin layer over acne-prone skin rather than only attacking individual pimples.
Start gradually if irritation is an issue. Dryness doesn't mean you need to quit immediately, but constantly destroying your skin barrier isn't progress either.
Give it 6–8 weeks before judging the results.
BENZOYL PEROXIDE
PanOxyl 4% is a straightforward option.Benzoyl peroxide helps with inflammatory acne and can be used alongside adapalene.
More isn't automatically better. Excessive irritation can leave you looking worse while convincing yourself the routine is “working.”
It can also bleach fabric.
STOP PICKING
Picking at every imperfection is one of the fastest ways to turn temporary acne into lasting marks or scars.Don't squeeze everything you see.
Don't scrub your face until it burns.
Don't use random DIY treatments.
The objective is to reduce inflammation and prevent new acne, not punish your skin.
SUNSCREEN
If you're serious about improving your skin, sunscreen is part of the routine.UV exposure can worsen discoloration after acne.
Options include:
- EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46
- La Roche-Posay Anthelios
- Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun SPF 50+
AZELAIC ACID
If acne or post-acne discoloration is still an issue, azelaic acid is another option.Examples:
- The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension 10%
- Paula's Choice 10% Azelaic Acid Booster
KNOW WHEN TO ESCALATE
If you're getting deep, painful acne, developing scars, or seeing little improvement despite consistent treatment, see a dermatologist. At that point, refusing effective medical treatment purely because you don't want to “hop on” isn't necessarily rational.
Accutane/isotretinoin can be extremely effective for severe acne, but it requires medical supervision and isn't appropriate for everyone.
FINAL
Don't overcomplicate this. You don't need to become a skincare expert.
You need to stop changing your routine every few days and give legitimate treatment enough time to work.
Cleanser. BPO. Adapalene. Moisturizer. Sunscreen. Consistency.
Fix what you can actually fix.
