Since you used the anime examples im going to use some too.
I believe the compactness of midface comes from eye area and eyebrow angularity not the midface itself

Both have same midface length but looks way different because of eye area specifically.

Notice how leo has shorter midface than tyson but looks lesser masculine than him. I think if the eyes aren't masculine shorter midface will make you look more childlike and feminine
