I met my sister’s best friend at a party when she was there with her boyfriend, and I was drunk and told her she looked good. At the time I didn’t really think much of it, but a few weeks later she started coming round and we slowly started lowkey flirting with each other. Nothing was ever said outright at first, and nobody else seemed to notice the tension between us, but we both knew it was there. The more we drank together, the closer we got, and eventually we started sleeping together without actually having sex. Then one night we did have sex, and afterwards she admitted to me that she liked me and that if she wasn’t with her boyfriend, she’d be with me. But the next day she completely changed her attitude and told me that if I ever told anyone, especially my sister, we’d never speak again. I kept it to myself for a while, but eventually I told my sister, and even before she found out, me and her carried on flirting and seeing each other. For a while it genuinely started feeling like something more than just sleeping together. She was coming round practically every day for weeks, we’d spend loads of time together, cuddle, drink together and just be around each other, and even though she still had a boyfriend, it honestly felt like there was something special between us. Eventually she found out that I’d told my sister and I didn’t see her for a while, which made everything feel even more confusing. Now she’s started coming round again and today she was hungover and ended up falling asleep in my arms while I was cuddling her, and I honestly don’t know how I’m supposed to take something like that. I’ve been single for years and I haven’t slept with anyone for years apart from her, so I think that makes everything hit me a lot harder than it probably would have when I was younger. I used to sleep around when I was younger and could probably separate sex and feelings a lot easier, but now I’m older, I don’t really have that same mindset anymore. With her, I can convince myself I’m over it when I don’t see her, but every time she comes back into my life, all those feelings come back with basically the same intensity. She’s told me she likes me, she’s acted like there’s something between us, and we’ve had moments that genuinely felt like a relationship, but at the same time she still has her boyfriend and has never properly chosen me. That’s what makes it so difficult because I don’t know whether what we have is actually something real that she’s scared to act on, or whether I’m holding onto something that she can switch on and off whenever she wants. I know I have genuine feelings for her now, and after everything that’s happened between us, especially being so close again today, I’m finding it harder to just treat it like nothing.
