You should study how America went from courting to dating in the 1890s-1930s it’s a pretty interesting topic on how dating was introduced in America and how it basically affected everything in the country.

I wouldn't call it shallowness, to be honest; physical appearance is a meaningful probabilistic cue to genetic fitness and to immunocompetence (at least in ancestral environments), so selecting on that basis is simply mate preference functioning as it evolved to. :Shruge:
