I'm an iDevOps engineer thinking about moving to Germany but I'm not sure if it's worth it. I have experience working in the USA plus 2 years of freelancing and a few large projects in industry. My German is B2 speaking and writing. I'm currently working on an H1B visa and have job offers from the UK. Interviews in Germany are going well but when it comes to salary it feels strange, as if companies don't want to go over a certain limit no matter how strong my background is.

When I tell them my US salary or UK offers they give me the cold shoulder and you can see they don't want to keep up with it. I've heard that German companies are reluctant to hire people with good options because they are afraid that they will leave soon for something better in Europe. Es sieht wie sie wollen nicht jemand der sehr gut ist und beste für die Rolle aber jemand der nur genug ist für die Rolle und genug verzweifelt dass Firma kann ihn in Leine halten.

Is this normal in Germany and is DE worth it for me?

Go to Germany its better then USA i lived there last summer they are in need of people in all fields . If i had enough money i wouldve live in Berlin or Hamburg two places where you can have a lot of fun .

Pay is significantly lower compared to US but US is pretty much a pipedream for immigration at this point

yeah this is totally normal in germany tech salaries here are way more compressed than in the us or uk most devops and cloud roles pay around €65–85k and even top offers in munich frankfurt or berlin rarely go above €100–120k compare that to the uk at about £70–95k or us at $130–180k and you see the gap german companies are risk averse they don’t like when someone comes in with way higher expectations because they assume you’ll leave for london or switzerland soon

my take
germany is great if you want long term stability residency and a better work life balance with 30 vacation days strong safety net and low overtime but if you’re chasing salary and fast career growth the uk or us will feel better german employers tend to hire good enough people they know will stick around not the absolute best with outside offers

ah ich hab so ungefähr zwei jahre in deutschland gelebt mein deutsch ist nicht mehr das beste aber geht schon ich glaub ich hab mal ein bisschen deutsch mit gengar geredet als ich am strand war wir haben versucht ähnlichkeiten zwischen niederländisch und deutsch zu finden

german economy is goind downhill wouldnt recommend to go here
u will earn less than in the us and will have to pay higher taxes
even though life in germany is cheaper its still a bad trade
life quality is good tho as long as u dont live in an immigrant flooded city
as long as our countrys poltics dont change rapidly i wouldnt recommend

Salaries in the EU aren't comparable to tech salaries in the US. We're talking double the salary in the US with lower taxes.
Whether the qol in Germany is better is an other question. More holidays, better worker protections, less grind culture, healthcare, etc.
You have to decide what's more important to you.

Edit: UK salaries should be comparable to German salaries, maybe even better in Germany. Which companies are you looking at? Bigger international companies or smaller ones?

Expect dev and networking. Everything you mentioned is in high demand. But devops and cybersec aren't entry level roles. People typically do dev work for a few years then move to these roles. Rn the most indemand hottest field rn is AI/ML scientist but you need a PhD/Master's for it with research experience. If you are beginner I'd suggest doing dev work, grind hard on leetcode and do some generative AI stuff. Companies love projects like that

Settling in the US is pretty much impossible after the new regulations. The best you can do is work for a few years and go back or branch out.

The US still has a lot of soft power, less so than 1-2 decades ago but it's still there. Might be smart to position yourself as a dev from the US.

Yes but I still feel the UK has better pay and all the ones I applied to were large international corporations.
