1. Humans are the only animals that have chins
2. Researchers don't know what functional benefit chins have
Could it help with chewing and biting? Nope
3. So maybe the only theory left is that it protects the jaw from breaking against punches. But great apes never needed that adaptation.
4. Humans probably have gotten chins from faces becoming smaller compared to neanderthals
So basically big chins in men were sexually selected for without much reason. This worthless few cms of bone decided your life. brutal

More leverage? NopeNeanderthals and other primates—including the great apes—which lack prominent chins but in many cases have far more powerful bites than we do.
And more force, in this case, should mean more bone mass in the chin—but that’s not what the results of the new research showed. Not only did the two turn out to be unrelated in the 37 subjects studied, but Holton and his colleagues even found that as the face matures, the chin is less adept at resisting mechanical forces, which is the whole reason it was assumed to grow more pronounced in the first place

PAMPUSH: Well, there's a couple of good reasons to suspect that that's not the reason that we have chins. First, human beings would have to be hitting each other so often or must be the clumsiest animals alive for as long as necessary to generate that kind of adaptation. And secondly, the chin is actually really bad in terms of preventing your jaw from breaking.

As human faces became smaller in our evolution from archaic humans to today – in fact, our faces are roughly 15 % shorter than Neanderthals’ – the chin became a bony prominence, the adapted, pointy emblem at the bottom of our face.
