For women with potential suitors, it seems that this is a variation on the “playing hard to get” idea. When there is a man who is decent looking or has decent resources for a long term relationship, they want to make the man prove that he is willing to stick with them.

If a woman could get 10 different guys who are all good looking, why would she go with the guy that will leave her when she is annoying when she could ramble and complain all day to another guy who will still buy her stuff and validate her?

Maybe its a sort of shit test, where she starts complaining to see if the man will take it or if he will shut it down and tell her to shut up. It seems this would be the more attractive thing for a man in a short term relationship whereas it would be better to have a man who would stick by you in a long term relationship.
