It was an otherwise unremarkable afternoon until I realised that someone had stolen my charger. I had left it on the table in the library while I briefly stepped outside to answer a phone call, assuming that, in a relatively quiet and supervised environment, it would remain exactly where I had left it. When I returned a few minutes later, however, it had inexplicably vanished.
Initially, I was convinced that I had simply misplaced it. I searched through my backpack, checked beneath the table, and even retraced my steps, but my efforts proved futile. Eventually, I noticed a student sitting nearby using a charger that looked remarkably similar to mine. Upon closer inspection, I recognised a small scratch on the cable, which I knew with certainty had not been present on his own charger.
Rather than immediately accusing him, I politely asked whether he had perhaps picked it up by mistake. His expression changed almost instantaneously, and after a moment of awkward silence, he admitted that he had taken it because he needed one urgently.
Although I was annoyed, I appreciated his honesty and simply asked him to return it. The incident taught me that even something as trivial as a charger can reveal quite a lot about a person’s character.
