South Korea declares Martial Law

What does this mean for us? I don't even get why this happened in the first place, from what i've read the president fears that the opposition is controlled by NK? But i don't see why this is a reason to call for martial law, if only bills happened in the first place. Can someone explain to me what exactly happened?
