I personally haven't watched a lot of anime, however I have read a lot of manga (anime comics). According to my calculations around 70K chapters of different manga/manhua/manhwa (manhwa, if I remember correctly is Korean, manhua is Chinese, manga Japanese).
I'm really happy that I stopped reading manga, cause that was a fucking addiction, like watching porn o playing games. I spent all my time reading manga. At school and lessons- read manga. At home - read manga. I was reading manga for 8+ hours a day....
You probably read one chapter in 1-3 minutes, so I spend on reading manga from 1166 HOURS to 3500 hours. I'm really very disappointed about how I spend half a year of my life on reading manga.
This addiction is very common among manga and anime fans. Honestly, there is no difference in plot between manga, manhwa and manhua, all the differences in drawing. Why? Because of that thing that your friends said - manga and anime are a mechanism to escape reality also it's probably a propaganda.
In ALMOST ALL manga/manhua/manhwa/anime character is OP, he is better than average, he gets all achievements and success easily. The funniest thing that I saw in 99.99% manga (not overshoot number) is that character at start is always below average, he's like the worst fighter in the world and etc (however it's pretty popular plot that in childhood he was the best and than became the worst and now he's abused by his parents, maybe that's story correlates with most of Asians) and then something happend with him and he gets a super power or talent or system (like you have to do simply tasks, for example take shit that system gives to you , and after that you'll be rewarded by some rare top-tier armor/skill and etc). System is a way to get goods easily, so no wonder why it's very popular genre.
Also there are popular genres like second life, reincarnation in another world. And in all that manga, main character is incel (ugly, fat, no friends) , than he reincarnates in another world and become Gigachad with harem. I think the reason why this plot is so popular doesn't need any explanation .
In reincarnation, he goes in past, correct mistakes, becomes rich, and slay all pussies, cause he knows the future. Same as reincarnation.
So in conclusion, manga is a great way to escape reality, cause in manga characters is popular with girls, gets all success easy and he still correlates with you and you feel empathy to him because he started from the bottom, where are you now, so manga creates a hope that one day you"ll become successful or you'll reincarnate live second life way better if you work hard in this life.
