The Mediterranean region is not restricted to its Western (European) parts or one country of its Eastern parts. The idea that it is makes no sense. Spain has more in common culturally with Morocco (a Western Mediterranean country you exclude) than it does with Greece. That doesn't even get into the parts of Spain in Africa (albeit they of course border Morocco but still).
