it's not so much that i give a shit; it's that my brain automatically goes into anxiety mode out of decades of habit, and once i'm in anxiety mode, it's impossible to control. it almost has nothing to do with the other person, more to do with my own judgement of myself.

but also, anyone who claims to not give a shit what people think is full of shit. humans are highly social. being shunned is a punishment that's been used for all of human history because humans inherently care what others think. people who claim to not care are just super confident that they're not going to do anything that makes people think something that actually matters.
