They're cheaper and easier to clean, in some countries they have only squat toilets, many Indians in fact would use normal toilets like the squat ones, standing on them, but it's risky, they can break the toilet or spread poo all over the place, some western companies with Indian workers even replaced their normal toilets with squat toilets, since the Indians kept destroying the regular ones...
