It's overrated but they do care.
The saying "A mother's love is the strongest thing" is false, but they want their kids to have a good life, however I think they're not that affected if they don't, and after the kids are 20 mothers probably care about themselves more than their kids.

They're designed to breastfeed/nurture during the early stages of development. After that, the children are mostly vessels for her own ego and survival (she will whore her daughters and expect her sons to work hard for her).
Also, women will absolutely abandon infants if they threaten her survival. Biologically, there isn't much advantage gained from a mother sacrificing herself because the infant needs her breastmilk and care in order to survive anyway. It's more efficient for mothers to ditch their infants and focus on surviving to reproduce again under more optimal conditions.
