Bullshit, you can’t marry anybody these days, not even amish girls are salvageable. Everybody is self centered and will stab you one way or another.

Forget your savings rate. Your blocker is not having compensation progression and your job/role not being tied to PnL metrics.

You can save 100% of your salary but if you don't switch careers you'll never make enough money for independence.

You need both, low burn, early consistent investment, and a career that compounds relentlessly.

You want to envisage your LinkedIn to look like a Champions League players Wikipedia page.

The issue isn’t a personal one but low pay that’s endemic to the entire mechanical engineering profession. At my age it’s far too late to consider a career switch - as you say “compounding” is too powerful to be able to do such things - I cannot compete with people with a 15 year head start on me.

Within mechanical engineering, I made a comparison between my wealth progression on current £43k salary and if I was on £75k and it only actually made a one year difference to my retirement age (£1m - 42 vs 43) - I would need to be making unheard of money for it to make a material difference. Most is driven by investment compounding and is essentially predetermined by the choices I made a decade ago.

The only way out of this mediocrity is probably to start a business but I lack any good ideas, soft skills, or connections and I’m not delusional enough to just quit my job with no proper plan.
