I keep seeing people in the Ratings sub-forum asking for ratings using a selfie photo which really doesn’t represent how you look irl at all.

The primary lenses used in our phones nowadays are extremely wide which is designed to capture objects and landscapes rather than accurately represent the human face therefore the object closest to the camera gets expanded for example:
Your nose
Your forehead
and your cheeks and ears get pulled back as seen in this example:
IMG_8179.jpeg

the left photo was taken via cell phone
and the right photo via a DSLR camera

In this study published by JAMA they found that taking a selfie from 12 inches away inflates nose in men by 30% and in women by 29% while making your chin appear 12% smaller.

Nasal Distortion in Short-Distance Photographs: The Selfie Effect

How to take a photo properly in order to get accurate ratings:
  • Use the rear camera not the front(selfie) one
  • Stand atleast 5ft(1.5m) away from the camera
  • Use neutral lighting
  • Hold a neutral expression and look straight into the camera

this will help you get an actual rating so that you know your flaws accurately and start properly researching what to do to fix them.

also apologies if the formatting is shit i made this from my notes app.

I only take mirror pics 2 meter away because I know the evil magic of lens distortion

The Back camera is also shit if you dont angle it correctly. Most posts related to rating that use the back camera dont even angle it properly in order to take an accurate shot

what do you mean by angling it properly? you just put your phone down on a surface and take the picture.

Some people don’t place their phones properly on a flat surface, but rather upwardly tilted etc ( i was just mentioning that i observed that in some threads), it also affects taking side profile pictures in mirrors since by tilting it slightly sideways or upwards your altering the perspective from where the photo is taken
