the NT thing to do would be to laugh with them and go along with the joke and then possibly mock them back in a joking manner so as not to create real tension

dont double down on yourself tho and make yourself become the guy everyone points to for being mocked, if they know they get an entertaining reaction each time, you become "That guy"

true which is why mocking them back (jokingly) lets people know you don’t take their shit, but also that you didn’t take it seriously and actually get upset.

Yeah that’s a very good and standard strategy.But don’t you think in some cases one should get back at him/her, cause laughing snd going along maybe treated as a weakness, especially when it is an insult disguised as a joke.

this is where you gotta establish intent

you gotta look at their comment and figure out their intent. Did they intend for the comment to be a hurtful insult? or did they intend for it to be a off hand joke at your expense

the former you can stick up for yourself sometimes, the latter you look like the dick if you get pissy

yeah that’s why u laugh along AND make fun of them as well jokingly. if you actually get mad then you will look like an autist just shoot jokes back and forth at each other, makes u look normal.
