I think if we were to use some broscience here, you would argue that a tan is seen as someone who is more outgoing, which in terms of mating (if we were to go a bit far back), indicates activity regarding gathering, hunting, etc. Someone who stays inside all day is more likely to be pale. There are a lot more hypotheses to draw from this type of questioning.

Then again, women obviously prefer white guys, and those are not always tanned, so it can be debatable, and a lot of models in top magazines etc. are usually white males who may or may not be tanned.

There's also the unfortunate shitskin currycel argument, who are obviously (generally) tanned but don't fair well out there.

I guess its just one of those things where if you are already decent looking then yes, it will work, otherwise its still over.
