how to handle taxes as a minor

ngl the biggest trap kids fall into is thinking that being under 18 means you are magically exempt from the IRS. the government does not care about your age at al, they only care about how much money you are printing. if you are making legitimate gains from online businesses, freelancing, or crypto flipping, you have to handle it right or you are gonna get audited and hit with massive fines down the line. here is the raw legal reality of how to handle it:
  1. the self-employment threshold: if you are freelancing, editing videos, or running an online store, you are classified as an independent contractor. the second you net over $400 in a single year from self-employment, you are legally required to file a tax return and pay a 15.3% self-employment tax.
  2. the regular income threshold: if you have a standard W-2 job (like working at a grocery store or fast food), you generally don't owe federal income tax unless you make more than the standard deduction, which is around $14,600 to $15,000 depending on the exact tax year. but you still have to file to get back any money they automatically deducted from your paycheck.
  3. use your dad's custodial setup: since you are a minor, you legally cannot sign binding tax contracts or set up individual tax accounts on your own. your taxes have to be filed as a dependent on your parents' return, or filed independently with a parent signing off as your legal guardian. if you are making serious bags, have your dad link you up with his CPA or use a basic filing software with him to report it properly.
  4. track every single expense: if you are running a business, stop throwing away your digital receipts. you can write off your software subscriptions, hardware, and editing tools as business expenses to drop your taxable income significantly so you keep way more of your profit.
don't raw-dog the IRS thinking you can hide behind your age ngl. lock it down early with your parents so your accounts don't get flagged and frozen.

get yourself an online business consultant paid by your dad it will be 100% better than searching stuff yourself and going into fines
