Basically virtue signaling is an attempt to be more conforming and/or progressive than others, in a way to get more social power. This is why cultures that pride themselves on being "equal" and "progressive" eat up SJW bullshit so quickly - normie idiots who don't understand anything, other than that they want the moral highground simply jump onto whatever is currently trending, forcing their peers to adopt the same stance lest they be viewed as socially and morally beneath others.

On the other hand, the same thing happens in less progressive places like conservative US states - you get eaten up alive socially if you don't fall in line.
