The real reason that modern societies are more equal isn't that we had a moral awakening. It's because technology is making us all more equal. Yes there are economic ups and downs but the pattern is pretty clear. Physical strength was the first thing to go and intelligence is going to be next. Eventually, even looks will be made irrelevant with cosmetic medical tech advances. One of the hardest pills to swallow is that we really are not special just because we are human or have unique talents. A day will come when everyone will truly be able to be and do whatever they want (within the constraints of physics).
