1. Do we really need perfect white teeth?

Depending on where you live, you may be exposed to countless advertisements which promote nice pearly white teeth; many of us may have it in our heads that nice white teeth are a halo. This thread will explore existing literature on teeth and its influence on attractiveness and other qualities of merit, as well as what we can do to teethmaxx. First, I go through some existing literature and merely point things out. Next, I shall attempt to summarize the findings and provide potential remedies. From the findings, it seems that straight natural-white teeth are ideal in attractiveness and other qualities of merit. Bleaching, whitening strips, and home remedies with baking soda or hydrogen peroxide can be used to help whiten discolored teeth. Crookedness of teeth can be allayed through bracers (Invisalign), dental bonding, or you can use dental veneers.

2. What are good teeth and what positive influences can they have?
From a study conducted by Invisalign and Kelton suggest that straight teeth to be more attractive. An article which talks about this study says, "Results of the study indicated that Americans perceive people with straight teeth as possessing more desirable qualities than those with crooked teeth, including attributes such as being happy, surrounded by loved ones and successful professionally. " .

Further evidence stating the inverse, and also stating that natural white teeth is are fine for attractiveness and that it is yellow teeth that cause lessened attractiveness, "Results showed that deviation away from normal spacing and/or the presence of yellowed colouration had negative effects on ratings of attractiveness and that these effects were markedly stronger in female models. Whitening had no effect beyond that produced by natural colouration." .

An article from Tufts outlining some of the sources of teeth stains, "Black tea or coffee; wines, both red and white; and darkly colored foods such as beets or chocolate are prime culprits. Other foods likely to stain teeth are berries, popsicles, candies and pickles. " Additionally, acidic foods and not brushing and flossing can more enamel more vulnerable to staining. Smoking and teeth grinding (grinding can wear away enamel) can also contribute. These are extrinsic causes: intrinsic causes, such as when the tooth was formed, and from things like medications are harder to remedy and you should probably see a specialist.

3. What can we infer?
Crooked teeth are inauspicious; a potential partner would probably not be enamored if you were open your mouth and your teeth were all crooked. Doubly so if they were yellow. Not only in romantic endeavors, but job interviews and other professional situations, would having straight white teeth benefit you. Exhausting efforts to get pearly white teeth as seen on advertisements are unwarranted, however: only a natural white coloration is necessary.

4. What to do?
If you are suffering from crooked teeth, you can look into the things mentioned in the first paragraph: bracers, most notably Invisalign, which are transparent plastic bracers that do not cause too much trouble, porcelain dental veneers, which are long-lasting covers that go on your teeth to fill gaps and other misalignments, and dental bonding performed by a dentist, in which a resin is applied to help fill gaps, whiten discoloration, and reshape teeth.

Insofar as when you eat foods or drink beverages which are teeth compromising, it is recommended in the tufts article to, "brush your teeth right after eating foods that can cause discoloration, and to make sure you’re brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing. Also, consume tooth-staining foods and beverages in moderation." Additionally, with the beverages (soda, fruit juices, tea, coffee, and more), using a straw helps your teeth not get directly impacted. The article also states that, "chewing sugarless gum can help neutralize the acids in the mouth. High-fiber foods can help lower the acid level as well".

If your teeth are already yellow and stained, you can try whitening strips, or you can have your teeth bleached by professional. Additional remedies, which you could do at home, include brushing your teeth with baking soda, though the article warns against doing this often as it is "very abrasive", and also hydrogen-peroxide remedies. Remedies including hydrogen-peroxide should be done with caution as it is very acidic and can also harm your teeth as well via corrosion.

5. Conclusion

While advertisements do correctly suggest straight teeth to be ideal, as it increases your perceived happiness, success, and probably other positive qualities, the pearly white teeth are superfluous: a natural white coloration is all that is needed. To maintain white teeth, you should regularly floss and brush, and especially after eating foods or drinkings things which may contribute to teeth discoloration. If you already suffer from discoloration, whitening strips, bleaching, brushing with baking soda, or using hydrogen-peroxide remedies may help whiten your teeth, though there are intrinsic discolorations which likely need to be resolved by a professional. Finally, if your teeth are crooked, consider trying Invisalign, porcelain dental veneers, or a dental bonding procedure. Bad teeth do not signal the end of someone, and moreso in women according to the second study mentioned, but having good teeth definitely contributes favorably to one. Ramirez had horrific teeth in some of his photos: he would look much more favorable with good teeth.

One caveat to be made: the study mentioned in the first article was done by Invisalign and Kelton -- Invisalign, Kelton seems to deal with marketing, are all about teeth: one could easily say that, "of course the study says straight teeth are better, it is funded by Invisalign."

Another addendum: anyone with more authority on the subject, or anyone who wishes to bring forth contradicting data, please do not hesitate to chime in. I do not wish to misdirect.
