It's a little different to do a few air strikes here and there and to actually fight on ground combat. ISIS was 30 000 men strong at it's height, and most of them were not even properly trained soldiers. If you had any military background, you became pretty much automatically a officer.
A organized Syrian or Iraqi army could've ended the war in months.
