Thai lookism is not subtle at all.
When I come back home from college for a family gathering, relatives and neighbors will just call me fat to my face. No soft language, no “you look different,” no therapy-speak. Just straight-up: you got fat.
And online, especially in Thai IG/TikTok spaces, the looks/status/money hierarchy is enforced like a caste system. Looks are the most visible filter, obviously. If a guy passes the face/status/money check, he can be awful and still get rationalized with “at least he’s handsome,” “at least he’s rich,” “at least my ex was hot,” etc. I’m not exaggerating — posts like that get thousands of likes and reposts.
But if you’re a regular Thai guy who doesn’t pass the looks threshold, the social script changes completely. You’re expected to know your place, act humble, compensate with money/status, and basically justify why you deserve to exist at all.
The weird part is that this standard seems to be enforced hardest on native Thai men. Foreign men often get filtered through a different rulebook entirely, but that is probably another wall of text.
