in my opinion based on what i've seen i have come to the conclusion that there are 3 different types of religious people.
if you are religious you are most likely to fall under one of these, however keep in mind that it's not either or, you can fall under 2 or even all of the categories.
1. struggling people
these people are living a hard life and turn to god as a way to cope with their struggles. the idea that there is a god watching over them and promising them eternal happiness if they serve him brings them comfort and helps them find hope in a hopeless life.
I have nothing against these people, in fact i have empathy towards them. i would say that majority of religious people fall under this category.
2. privileged people
these people are ultimately living an easy life and sometimes only really believe in god because of the fact that theyre living an easy life. think of a family that lives in a first world country, they have money, they're all healthy, theyre all happy. why wouldnt they believe in god? they are seemingly blessed by him, so it feels natural for them to believe. a lot of these privileged people who believe in god are also ignorant to what is going on in the world since it doesnt directly affect them, so it doesnt affect their belief in god in any way.
i believe that 1 and 2 are 2 ends of the same spectrum. meaning not everybody is either extremely privileged and not everybody is living a hellish life, obviously. some people are in the middle, they may be privileged enough to have a home, have food to eat, and have good health. however they may also go through some struggles as any person does. and their belief in god can be due to both their gratefulness for the privileges that they have as well as a way to cope with the struggles they go through.
3. people who have a genuine interest in religion
these people actually take time to learn about the different religions and choose the religion they think is the most convincing/true. a lot of them definitely have some bias toward the religion they were born into when theyre learning about them but not all of them are like this.
i respect these people the most because they dont just blindly believe, and they realize that religion is a nuanced topic that requires a deep understanding of god and philosophy.
after writing this thread and rereading it i feel like im pointing out the obvious but i never really stated that this was some kind of hot take tbh.
