its true, the same thing goes for inmates who go in solitary confinement. They are permanently mentally fucked up from the experience and they can never be the same as before
Harry Harlow Monkey Experiments: Cloth Mother vs Wire Mother
In Harlow's experiment, baby monkeys preferred a soft, cloth "mother" over a wire one, even when the wire "mother" provided food. This demonstrated the importance of comfort and affection in attachment, beyond just basic needs like nourishment.

There was a good study done on Rhesuses monkeys where the monkeys basically are isolated for 6 months to a year.
For the first week in isolation the Monekys desperately try to escape everyday but after a month they give up entirely. Then after a few months even when re-entered into the general monkey population they refuse to socialize at all. When female monkeys were inseminated and had children they would kill them or neglect/not feed them.
I wonder how similar this is for humans.
