Not hyperbole, but it does require long term thinking.
YOUR ABILITY TO SPEND MONEY WILL ALWAYS OUT SCALE YOUR ABILITY TO MAKE MONEY.
So it's more important you have being efficient with your money locked down before even considering scaling income.
Obviously the exception to this is if you have absolutely no income. Then you have to focus on getting income first. After you finally get the first flow, then optimization and efficiency become most important.
Here are the biggest wallet killers I recommend avoiding, listed in order of most financially detrimental, to least:
- gambling
- rent/mortgage/hotels
- real estate in densely populated regions (ie LA or NY)
- new cars
- hard drugs (arguably at the top if you get addicted)
- any insurances (no exceptions)
- soft drugs (ie cigarettes, tabacco, weed)
- prostitutes (could be higher depending on fetishes)
- take out
- Ubers/lyft/taxis/etc.
- door dash/Uber eats/ any food delivery
- anything subscription based
If you manage to minimize (or better yet, eliminate) everything listed above, your chances of getting rich skyrocket dramatically.
And yes I'm aware sometimes the situation requires one of these (like mandatory car insurance so police don't impound your car, or a take out just due to convenience at the time), but in general... Avoid these at all costs, if possible.
