Have you ever wondered why Chinese people from China
are so boneless, but Chinese Americans don’t suffer the same fate …

I believe this phenomenon is due to Mao’s Great Leap Forward, where the Chinese people suffered from food insecurity and the great famine.
A famine that lasted years, killed 15-45 million people and worst of all led to a generation of short small skull children…
But those that fled before the communist reign, in particular those that fled to the USA were not subjected to this same fate.
At first glance you might not think that a famine could alter genetics but buckle up, this affected their bones in two main ways : 1. Development stunting and 2. Epigenetic programming.

Chinese immigrants who moved to the United States before 1949 completely bypassed the severe economic disruptions, strict rationing, and devastating famines (such as the Great Chinese Famine) that occurred in mid-20th-century China.
Growing up with consistent access to high-protein diets, essential vitamins, and reliable healthcare allowed these individuals to meet 100% of their biological growth potential. Their bodies never had to divert energy away from bone growth to protect vital organs.

When a mother experiences severe malnutrition, her body places chemical tags (epigenetic markers) on the fetus's DNA, programming the child to expect a world of scarcity. This often results in lower birth weights, shorter stature, and altered skeletal development, physical signatures that can echo into the grandchildren's generation.
Because pre-communist immigrant families lived in an environment of food security, their children were spared this intergenerational programming. Free from the biological trauma of starvation, their genetic blueprint for height and facial structure remained uninhibited, allowing subsequent generations to display more prominent physical development.
