tl;dr: It's nearly impossible to find decent chewing gum these days

I'm really disappointed by Wrigley right now. They took their only decent gum with no sugar alcohols, aspartame and other potentially harmful ingredients (except from BHT maybe) that are present in every other product off the market: big red. I've used big red for years for this reason. The last time I bought it, I purchased a year's supply in bulk online. Even cheaper than at the store when they still stocked them. I still have many packs left in my apartment.

Most gums contain sugar alcohols like sorbitol, xylitol or mannitol that can mess up your gut and/or aspartame which is metabolized to methanol. In high enough concentrations, its toxic metabolites formaldehyde and formic acid can lead to destruction of the retina and optic nerve and cause metabolic acidosis. My father suffers from macular degeneration since his 20's and also severe myopia since he was a child and he's been using sweetener tablets excessively for his coffee for decades (always six ones per cup). May or may not be coincidence but I do believe it's possible that his unhealthy habit has led to or at least plays a partial role in his condition.

There's other junk in gum as well but mentioning it all would blow up this thread. The ingredients/additives that are used universally by nearly all of the big gum manufactoring companies are considered safe for human consumption but some only so because there's a lack of long term studies to prove them harmful. FDA safety regulations are flawed and shouldn't be trusted blindly.

I spent hours comparing countless of gum products and must say that unfortunately 99% of them are garbage. I ordered mastic resin tears yesterday, it's more expensive than conventional gum but at least they're not packed full of artificial additives. You may get away with regular gum if you use it only sparingly but if you chew a lot, the damage may add up over time. In the case of sugar free gums, it may even affect you instantly. Yes, xylitol may be good for your teeth but too much of it will definitely not feel good in the bathroom.

Hmmm...I noticed this too, the quality of gum has been decreasing lately, I could chew a piece for hours before, put it away, then use it the next day, then the next, etc...Now after about two hours, the gum starts to simply dissolve in my mouth...

I like chewing gum. It helps with stress, improves concentration, curbs my appetite, fixed my teeth enamel problems and gives my jaw a workout

i prefer ethanol
Sugar alcohols are used as more tooth-friendly sweeteners in chewing gum. Ethyl alcohol wouldn't work

Just buy real gum? What's the problem? There's plenty of mastic gum in this world still left.

That's because it does, royally fucks your jaw up for no results

I had sensitive teeth constantly. Acidic, sugary, hot and cold things would hurt like a bitch and make my teeth even more sensitive. Chewing gum on a regular basis got rid of that issue completely

Already got scammed once by buying mastic-flavoured gum which was labelled "mastic gum"

True, love how People Here think for themselfs as opposed to most of reddit . Reddit has some based subs but they are dying out. FDA need to be investigated more.

Thanks for advice
