So I’m in this English class I took just for the writing credit. Sitting in the back corner seat with full view. I have a good look at the faces of all the students in the room. Each fake laugh. Each blank, bored stare. Each little show off flex for attention. I don’t even take notes anymore. I just study the other people.
Some girl is giving her presentation. Monotone voice. Fill-in slides. Then the door opens.
A kid walks into the room. Not from our class. Just shows up. Six feet tall. Lean athletic build. Good hair cut. Calm face. No noise. Not even any arrogance about him. He walks in the way you walk into a place when you own silence.
There is a change of atmosphere in the room. The girl who is giving the presentation, stutters like some glitch in her brain has occurred. Each girl turns her head. Even those pretending to be customary focused. Then I see her. The girl I have had a crush on for quite a while. She smiles. Not just a smile, but that little involuntary one that shows everything. That it’s just a reflex on her part she can’t stop. That look is more than loaded, it's more than heartbreak.
The guy looks around, realizes he is in the wrong room, and leaves. 15 seconds. No word spoken.
Class is over. I am walking behind two girls. One’s a looker. One is built like a linebacker. I hear them say, “He was so hot I lost my train of thought.” They giggle. Loud.
That is when it broke upon me. Everything I thought was true. The talk about personality is having its rebuff. You can read philosophy, lift every day, and make it a point to perfect your eye knock. I mean, words and language are of no importance whatever, and all that stuff, when a stranger comes in with a good build and haircut. He didn’t have to say a word either. He didn’t need to. Evolution has made its choice.
And I sat there in the corner and watched nature pick the winner.
