Willpower is finite and we are fickle creatures of psychological pressures - constant failure, disappointment, and humiliation traumatizes you and tends to make you bitter and cynical over time. Sometimes it's better to just give up when you know defeat is certain, to save the energy for something else.

Only a machine or an emotionless autistic robot could truly operate in this way.
