The Sahel is being ravaged by islamists so badly that cities are erecting walls to repel raiders
Some countries are almost fully controlled by islamists
For example Ibrahim Traores Burkina Faso is 80% by JNIM (Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin)
More than 70% of Mali is controlled by JNIM and ISGS
And i believe France pulling out of the Sahel contributed greatly to this.
the first half of 2024 saw a 25% increase in civilian casualties in affected regions according to the Armed conflict location and data event project
10 years prior, France effectively pushed out islamists from all of malis major cities in Operation Serval and launched operatjon barkhane right after, which ended in a failure due to the islamists consistent growth (likely due to the french being viewed as neocolonialists) and because they were forced out of mali by the new government after a coup d’etat
However these governments (mali niger and burkina faso) have proved innefective in combatting terrorists their russian allies haven’t helped either
I believe there is no hope left for the sahel, french intervention may neuter the Islamists but they will keep growing as a result of said french intervention, the independent governments arent able to combat it themselves either
TL;DR, the sahel has no hope
