The fact that actually removing mass from certain parts of your mandible can make it more aesthetic and in some cases more robust looking proves that mass distribution > total mass (removing long chin makes mandible more square and wider looking)

Generally yes. We know higher bite force is correlated to a lower gonial angle and it is suggested that the chin provides a biomechanical advantage to the structural integrity of the mandible. So at least based on the environmental factors (mastication) that models the mandible, this makes sense.
