North Korea, known officially as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) is an oriental state, led by the Worker’s Party of Korea (WPK) which oversees every function within the state. Discussion over the DPRK itself is surrounded by controversy. And despite the DPRK being the most sanctioned country in world history, our revolutionary comrades remain steadfast in their pursuit of international revolution. I will defend the DPRK, explain its policy, and sustain the idea of it being a bastion for socialism.
To understand the actions the DPRK takes, once must understand the purpose and idea behind the state itself. This idea is called Juche, which literally means “self reliance” is a theory of Marxist-Leninism created by Kim Il-Sung which accepts Marxist ideas and adapts them to specifically fit the material conditions present in the Korean state. It is key to note that this does not mean that Juche exceeds the original Marxist foundation which it is built upon nor the ideas of Lenin. It is nothing more than the constant expression of material conditions specific to the the DPRK. In other words, Juche is for the people of the DPRK, and by the people of the DPRK.
The essence of Juche is self reliance, for the nation to rely on itself in terms of production, resources, capacities, and everything inbetween, rather than that of other nations. It is political, economic, and militaristic self-reliance. It is for man to be the master of himself rather than to serve others. When Kim Il-Sung first announced these ideas, he announced it to crowds of party members who were tired of foreign dogma, who wanted to make something entirely new rather than a copied state. These revolutionaries of the past believed that for the DPRK to prosper, it must become fully independent. The modern North Korean state follows such a tradition of national independence while keeping away from isolationism, an idea that unlike Juche, presents total exclusion as a solution. Instead of sovereignty it prioritizes estrangement, a foreign idea to the DPRK and a perversion of what Kim Il-Sung originally invented.
A secondary component of Juche is to establish nationalism in order for internationalism to take place. As Kim Jong-Il wrote in ON NATIONALISM.
“Nationalism does not conflict with internationalism. Mutual help, support and alliance between countries and nations—this is internationalism. Every county has its borders, and every nation has its identity, and revolution and construction are carried on with the country and nation as a unit.” - Kim Jong-Il, ON NATIONALISM, 2008.
As the great pioneer and revolutionary Kim Jong-Il stated, socialist revolution does not mean an abandonment of nationalism. For internationalism without nationalism is an empty shell. The national proletariat of each nation must collaborate with one another through nationalist internationalism. The destruction of one’s own borders, means the destruction of sovereignty, which then leads on to national destruction. It is impossible for the international proletariat to succeed without the initial succession of the national proletariat to begin with. Armed international revolution begins with local revolutions which develop into socialist states, and these socialist states then develop mutual ties with one another to struggle against the global imperialist bourgeoisie.
This leads us to a basic understanding of the motives, purpose, and principles of the DPRK. Now it is time to answer commonly asked questions.

Can the DPRK perpetuate imperialism around the world?
No. It is impossible for the DPRK to ever be imperialist so long as the Juche idea remains unchanged. This is because imperialism is no less than the economic conquest of another country, and so there is no economic motive for a people’s state such as the DPRK to become imperialist as the DPRK does not contain surplus capital, nor does it necessitate the allocation of resources from other places onto itself due to national self-sufficiency. Reunification is not imperialism, it is the way in which the DPRK expresses nationalist desires to secure the Korean people into a singular establishment.

Is the DPRK a hereditary monarchic state?
It is not, in fact this would be the equivalent of calling the United States a monarchy for having dynastic style rule such as seen in the Bush or Adam’s family. In no place in the constitution does the DPRK ever claim the status of being a monarchy. There is no legal framework requiring blood relations. Moreover, the supreme leader of the DPRK has the absolute power to choose the next ruler, this is no different than leaders of the past such as Lenin who were able to select who the following leader of the Soviet Union would be. If the DPRK were a monarchy then wouldn’t Kim Jong-Nam have been required to be the next supreme leader of the DPRK after Kim Jong-Il? No, because the supreme leader can decide who receives power. This is quite a successful system of inheritance, as the DPRK is the longest existing socialist state in history.

Is the DPRK still a socialist state which aims to abolish class?
The answer is a resounding yes, the state never abandoned the goal of socialism, and socialism remains the core. In fact, the supreme leader himself wrote about this on July 1st, 2026.
“It is the steadfast stand of our Party and government to steadily develop the DPRK-China friendly relations with long and historical roots and with socialism as their core” - Respected Comrade Kim Jong Un.
Furthermore, the DPRK does aim to abolish class long term, but this cannot occur until after scarcity is eliminated for only then can there be no resources to selectively hold and administer.
TLDR: Start supporting North Korea and read Kim Jong-Il.
