Although inconvenient to those unfamiliar with using them, manuals exist due to their inherent reliability and ability to put control directly in the driver's hands.

They initially provided better performance and fuel efficiency than automatics [proper torque converters], and it wasn't until computerized automatic transmissions came along that they started becoming outclassed.

Then again, this itself is only due to said computerized transmissions automating what are essentially still manual transmissions at heart fundamentally [dual clutches, sequentials, and early automated-manuals etc].
