The existence of people that are able to torture people and endure torture is unfathomable to me

I really can't even comprehend how you can spend several days cutting into the skin of a guy because he somehow angered your gang/cartel or whatever, I also can't fathom how someone can go into that while knowing there is a chance of being tortured. Really makes you wonder how insane life was when there was no civilization, do you just get "tougher" because you were born into that life or are you as scared as most people are today.
