Background
In the early days of .org there was a feature where you could “watch” users (i.e. you would be notified whenever they posted). Most users never really used it but it was sometimes helpful
(what it used to look like)
Something strange…
Between 2020 and 2022 a strange phenomenon used to regularly occur regarding this feature. Multiple users reported being “watched” or “followed” by random unknown accounts…
These accounts:
-Had gibberish for usernames
-Were created either very recently or months ago
-Had no posts
-Would not reply or engage with anyone
It was really creepy. No one really knew who these accounts belonged to or where they came from. They would sometimes mass “watch” or “follow” hundreds of users simultaneously
Rumours
This was also during the time when .org was repeatedly being mass reported, ddosed and brigaded by people from r/inceltears and other groups. The forum was forced to shut down multiple times because of this
It was also heavily suspected that federal agents and general intelligence services were actively monitoring and observing the forum. Some users even claimed that Master was paid to allow these ghost accounts to “watch” the forum
These rumours were never confirmed nor denied by forum mods. This phenomenon died off in 2023 when the “watching” feature was removed
But the question still remains… who were these accounts? Was it bots? Trolls? Federal agents? To this day it still remains one of the biggest mysteries of .org
