I'll explain in the simplest possible terms since everyone here has the attention span of a gold fish.

When you used to search something on Google. You used to be able to see upto 100 pages but now it is reduced to 10..

1000124143

Now the question. Who looks through those 100 pages anyway Jason. The problem is that those 100 pages weren't meant for people it's for chatgpt, web crawlers to look through and give a varied and diverse set of results but now it is reduced to the same 10 pages that everyone sees

1000124145

Mr Pichai says it's for efficiency reasons but everyone knows it is for getting rid of web scrapers and competing AI models. Fewer pages, less content and more reliance on Google's api and more power and control in Google's hand. Just like that half the internet has vanished and all those little websites and blog pages are gone. Nobody is finding them. They still exist but nobody knows.

Yeah but that's just be first theory, they're still basically the same thing.
No Google's search engine is vastly superior. Google's PageRank and its evolution through Al and machine learning and indexing of literally billions of pages make it more or less untouchable

Bing, DuckDuckGo yandex or whatever have niche advantages like privacy rewards systems, image search, vertical searches but when it comes to sheer performance, speed and efficiency. There's nothing that competes with Google.

This will only yield short-term results and give Google a minimal advantage, to be honest. Other AI systems simply need to adapt by finding more creative ways to obtain information, or by training their neural networks to identify topics and use pre-trained keywords to achieve better results, or by further expanding their searches and their cycles. More computing power will be needed, but with the influx of money the AI sector is currently experiencing, it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Damn, such a small move yet so much influence. No wonder no one's talking about it, i wouldn't pay attention to pages missing aswell, hell i never even check the second page of a google search.

It basically ONLY impacts AIs, pretty big brain move

Other Al systems might adapt sure, but they'll now have to rely on Google's filtered dataset which is exactly what they want. The diversity of information is shrinking and the internet is slowly becoming a curated echo chamber controlled by a handful of companies

Very interesting. Should I put my nest egg in Google?

Anyways, I hate add based results. You know, in the early 2000's you could find anything on Google.

For example if you typed in "People who like to sleep outside on yellow trampolines while wearing glitter coated finger cots on the tips of their ears.", you would find 10 websites run by people who dedicate their lives to sleeping outside on yellow trampolines while wearing glitter coated finger cots on the tips of their ears. Their sites would feature a never ending wall of information detailing their journey into sleeping outside on yellow trampolines while wearing glitter coated finger cots on the tips of their ears, and everything you could ever possibly think of having to do with it.

Nowadays the internets useless. Only good for watching videos and movies.

Recently I tried to google an old meme format I used to enjoy (alpha male problems - if you know, you know) and for the life of me I couldn't find it at all. It like it was completely erased from the internet. Not even mentioned on Knowyourmeme.com.

They could, but Google's algorithm is light years ahead in ranking quality, freshness, spam filtering, and depth of indexing. Even if an Al switches search engines the moment it loses Google's signal quality. the outputs get noticeably worse. That's why everyone keeps defaulting back to Google whether they like it or not. It's like trying to replace a Ferrari engine with a scooter motor

I'd assume they have in-house custom built engines integrated into the AI models anyway. I heavily doubt all the other guys are that stupid and didn't see this coming.

Some of them do have in house crawlers Like applebot, bingebot, yandexbot

1000124236
1000124237

but that's not the same as having a Google level search engine. Building a full search stack means billions of dollars of infrastructure and several petabytes of data on top of that Google has theirs systems trained on decades of user behavior and efficiency

Even if they saw this coming they just don't have the scale or the data to match Google. That's why all the big players piggyback on Google shaped signals. You can build your own engine sure but matching Google's quality is different story.

This is the most upsetting thing. You search something semi obscure nowadays and Google just doesn't have it. Like what even is the point of using the world's largest search engine if it can't help me find shit?

Glad I switched.
