The pension age is 65 years for men in Hungary.
It used to be the same for women, but back in 2011 laws were changed so that women now can retire after 40 years of work* if they want to. It’s legal to work from 16 years of age, which means they could retire as early as 56 - or perhaps 58 if they started to work when they turned 18.
* of those 40 years, they don’t even have to work all 40. 32 years of work + 8 years of state payments after kids is also a posibility for them.
Retiring at 56-58 instead of 65 already would grant women 7-9 years more retirement time, but things don’t end here;
Females live a lot longer than males on average. At the time of the law changes in 2011, the life expectancy in Hungary was 71 years for men and 79 years for women - a 8 year gap in favour of women.
Add the two together and you get women can possibly live comfily in retirement 15-17 years more than men simply by the merit of being born with two X chromosomes.
The official reasoning behind the law change was that “ women’s lives are harder, they have to work both in jobs and raise kids”
On top of this, we should also consider how those 40 years (or 32) are spent for women vs men. Women get to work in safe, clean condition in “bullshit jobs” such as in HR departments and other office jobs.
While many men have to resort to dirty, both physically and mentally taxing, dangerous work environments
And finally the coup de grace at the end of the post. You may say, “yes Prettyboy, women can on paper choose to retire early but not many do it because they’d be earning lot less if they were to retire”
And that’s where you’d be wrong, they don’t have to pay taxes on income earned on the sides while already being retired
