people believe in god because most of us seek meaning in suffering and we seek purpose to our lives. It's really easy to call an idea that's literally based on faith retarded when you don't have faith yourself.

Interpretations on god varies, and most religions have rules, doctrines, and commandments that seek to compel it's followers into following a life of god according to their interpretation. Not forgetting the fact that people have lived lives with belief in divinehood before christianity and judaism, which you'd be calling retarded too
