Japanese identity in the truest sense belongs to the Jomon derived peoples of the Ainu, Ryukyuans, and Emishi.
Japanese culture is anything which directly derives from the Jomon people.
The Yamato are just Chinese and Korean settlers who mixed with the Jomon while launching wars and conquests against the Jomon peoples of the Emishi and later on the Ainu and Ryukyuans.
The Yamato expansion was a form of Sinicization of the Japanese archipelago.
