The biggest appeal of the game was the relationship between the two. On one side, she reminds him of his deceased daughter and he is like a father figure to her... On the other side, they're an attractive pair of unlikely partners growing closer to each other amidst a post apocalyptic wasteland.... The developers never explicitly touch on the topic of a sexual tension between the two, but it's always on the back of your mind. The will-they-won't-they chemistry was a big factor that contributed the success of the game. If either of them were ugly, the game just wouldn't be the same.

When you look at a cute JB, your first instinct is to want to protect her. Her being attractive makes her life more precious, which is fundamental to raise the intensity of the situation when her life is danger. If she was some ugly bitch, you naturally wouldn't care as much about her.

And when you look at a warrior skulled chad, your first instinct is to think he is bad-ass and look up to him. His look is a huge factor that contributes to the "coolness" of the game. If he looked like a wimp, it just wouldn't have the same appeal.
