The law used to contain a lot of hints about how the sexes really are and what are their proper relations.
For example, marital rape used to be legal, which kinda sent a hint to husbands that maybe their wife wouldn't mind their taking charge and getting rough in the bedroom. I think that knowledge became lost and had to be regained (we call it BDSM now under the pretense that it's all supposed to be consensual, since that's the only way to avoid censorship).
Likewise, when discrimination against women was banned, people started to think that women really did have equal abilities as men, or else why would we have a law like that?
